UNION DUES FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
HOW MUCH WILL I PAY IN DUES?
Dues for all members whose hourly earnings rate is $11.00 per hour or less shall pay two times their hourly rate plus seven dollars per month. Dues for all members whose hourly earnings rate is over $11.00 per hour and you are employed in an industry in which you have a legal right to strike, your dues shall be two and one half times the hourly wage rate plus seven dollars per month. Dues for members whose hourly rate is over $11.00 per hour, employed in the public sector who are legally not entitled to strike, shall be two and one quarter times their hourly rate plus seven dollars. An initiation fee may be charged when you first become a member.
WHY DO I PAY DUES?
Dues provide the resources to stand up for good jobs and benefits, decent working conditions and a better future for our families. None of this would be possible without the strength that comes from our Teamster dues. Most of your dues, more than 78 percent, stay with your local union in order to fund activities that give workers more power at the bargaining table. Your dues pay for Organizing expenses; Office equipment and regular administration expenses; Attorneys to assist in negotiations, grievances and arbitration; Training Research into companies and industries to gather information for negotiations and organizing; and Accountants to analyze the company's books. Members are given the details about how dues money is spent each month at regular monthly membership meetings, and local unions also file annual reports with the U.S. Department of Labor. The International Union publishes its annual audited financial statement in Teamster magazine, which is sent to every member so you always know where your dues money is being spent.
DO MY UNION DUES GET DEDUCTED FROM MY PAYCHECK?
Yes, they will be deducted by your employer. However, each employer’s pay schedule is different so you should check with your employer’s payroll department to ask them when the union deductions are made.
IF I LEAVE MY JOB TEMPORARILY (LAY OFF, LEAVE OF ABSENCE, SEASONAL WORK, ETC) AM I RESPONSIBLE TO KEEP PAYING UNION DUES WHEN I AM NOT WORKING?
You are responsible for paying your union dues while you are off if you do not request a withdrawal card. You would send a personal check or money order in by the end of each month for the current month. However, if you request the withdrawal card, you will not have to pay union dues while you are off.
IF I GET A WITHDRAWAL CARD WHILE I AM OFF, WHAT WILL THAT AFFECT?
Obtaining a withdrawal card while you are off makes you an inactive member. You will not receive regular union mailings until you return to an active status. It does not affect your health and welfare benefits or your pension benefits unless you are off for an extended period of time. If you would need to file a grievance while you are off, you would redeposit your membership and begin to pay your dues on your own.
WHEN IS MY INITIATION FEE DUE?
Your complete initiation fee is due when you are sworn in to the union.
HOW DO I PAY MY INITIATION FEE, CAN I MAKE MULTIPLE PAYMENTS?
In most cases, you pay a partial payment of initiation fee when you make application with the union. You may then make payments until the balance is complete by either paying it on your own or having it deducted from your pay. If you do not make payments, you would pay the balance when you are sworn in.
I PAID A TEAMSTERS UNION INITIATION FEE AT A PREVIOUS PLACE OF EMPLOYMENT, DO I HAVE TO PAY THE FEE AGAIN AT MY NEW JOB?
No, you would pay a transfer fee to your previous local union as long as you requested a withdrawal card from that local. The transfer fee is usually the amount of one month of dues plus $.50.
