What is a Union?
People who are not in a union or don’t know anyone in a trade or labor union are often unsure what labor unions do and why someone would join. Sadly, some Employers are providing employees with negative and incorrect information about what unions are. There are often misconceptions by Employers that unions want to divide the communication line between workers and their Employers. That can't be further from the truth. The Union strives to work in conjunction with the Employer to create a positive, safe and productive working environment. A Union is a bargaining representative for employees. Joining a union helps ensure you have a voice at work with the extra support of the union standing beside you.
Labor unions aim to improve the lives of all working families by working to ensure families get what they collectively deserve. A union is an organized group of workers who unite to make decisions about conditions affecting their work. Our members are THE UNION. Teamsters Local 205 is part of The International Brotherhood of Teamsters (IBT) a labor union in the United States and Canada. Formed in 1903, the IBT union now represents more than 1.4 million members, a diverse membership of blue-collar and professional workers in both the public and private sectors. Being a Teamster member means that you belong to the strongest and most democratic labor union in the world. For more than 100 years the Teamsters Union has been a leader in setting the standard for higher wages, better benefits and improved working conditions for workers throughout the United States and Canada. Virtually all the benefits you have at work, whether you work in the public or private sector, are there because unions fought hard and long for them. Many union leaders and members even lost their lives for things we take for granted today. |
